🥢 Crispy Tangyuan with Roasted Peanuts and Red Dates

Ingredients (serves 2)
  • 1¼ cups (150 g) glutinous rice flour
  • About ⅓ cup (70 ml) warm water
  • Natural red food coloring (from beetroot or dried strawberry) for half the dough
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ¼ cup (30 g) unsalted roasted peanuts
  • About 2 to 2½ teaspoons (10-12 g) powdered sugar
  • 4-6 dried red dates (jujube), pitted and chopped
  • Extra virgin olive oil spray
Preparation
  • In a bowl, gradually mix the glutinous rice flour with warm water until you get a soft, pliable dough. Divide in half; add the natural red coloring to one part and knead until evenly tinted.
  • Form small smooth balls (about 2 to 2½ teaspoons each) with slightly damp hands.
  • Optional steam pre-cook (for a softer interior): Steam the tangyuan for 5 minutes to prevent them from being undercooked after air frying.
  • Air fry: Arrange the tangyuan on parchment paper in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them. Spray evenly with olive oil for a light and even crisp.
  • Air fry at 356°F (180°C) for about 10-12 minutes, turning them halfway and spraying again with oil. They should be crispy outside and slightly soft inside.
  • Grind the roasted peanuts with the powdered sugar into a fine powder.
  • Place the tangyuan in a bowl, sprinkle with the peanut powder, and top with chopped red dates.

Gourmet Tip – Serve the tangyuan warm with a drizzle of sesame honey or malt syrup for a rich, sweet contrast that enhances both crunch and softness. The oil spray keeps them extra light—perfect if you want to try a savory variation too!
